Diego: Our Morning Rooster

🐾 Meet Diego: Our Morning Rooster with a Chihuahua Heart

Diego was just a pup when he was rescued from the Palmdale Animal Shelter in Southern California. He was part of a group of Chihuahuas found wandering the desert—frightened, feral, and scheduled for euthanasia. When we met Diego, he trembled at the sight of human hands, flinching away from any attempt to offer comfort.

But we saw a spark in him. A chance for something better.

Since then, Diego has blossomed at our mini sanctuary. He’s still got his quirks—his high-pitched bark could wake the mountains—but he’s also become deeply affectionate with the people he’s come to trust. It’s been a slow, beautiful process, watching this once-feral pup find his sense of safety, love, and even joy.

Now, Diego has claimed his role as our official wake-up call. Like a rooster in a cowboy movie, he starts barking promptly at 6:30 AM, alerting the entire sanctuary that it’s time to rise and shine.

His closest companions are Scarlett O’Hara, a sassy senior, and Faith the Magnificent, who lives up to her name. The trio are inseparable, a little desert-born pack that now spends their days sunbathing, snuggling, and occasionally causing minor chaos together.

Diego is a reminder of what patience, love, and second chances can do. He may be small, but his spirit—and his morning voice—are impossible to miss.

We love you, Diego. Long live the rooster of the rescue. 🐓❤️
